Decent base. Personnel lack serious military customs and courtesies training then make up the most ridiculous excuses when they're called out on it such as "we were taught to not salute commissioned officers in vehicles because its disrespectful". The personnel here are a joke, especially the security/police forces. If they were to downsize, I'd definitely recommend getting rid of the plethora of overpaid and under worked military policeman on base. They literally joy ride for 10 hours per shift looking for something to do.
We just had a wonderful stay at pine tree inn on the base. We had two adjoining rooms with kitchenettes in each room, pull out sleep sofas and separate bedrooms and bathrooms. Not only were the rooms wonderful with every convenience necessary but there was also a laundry room that was free. We were able to cook our own meals, wash clothes every night and sleep well. The AC in each room worked great as well. We were also only 30-40 minutes away from Mount Rushmore; Wind and jewel caves were a bit farther but definitely worth it. The staff at Pine Tree were great and we would definitely stay there again.
Family was stationed there from 76 to 79. Snow, ice, parents against kids snowball fights. Real fieldtrips. At the lake every weekend. Lake Packtola (not sure of the spelling)was like being in Hawaii. Fishing, swimming, water skiing. Yellow bus off base blue bus on base. Eating at Randi's Pizza Barrel. Making Snickers and Snowball runs to Burlerson's convinece store (Mom's pregnacy cravings) Taking the turnstyle short cut there. Badger Clark,Francis Case and brother went to Vandenburg Jr. High and Douglas.
My son and I stayed there in December, 2016. They were not open but left our package at check in and everything was in order. The directions were great and even though it was very cold we had a good stay. Thank you very much..
My Father and mother and I live on the base in 1966 to 1969. After that we lived off base in Sioux City. It was a great place to live. My father was an Air crewmen and my mom worked in the IBM computer dept and me I was having a good old time being around all those very large planes,B52 bombers, supersonic jets. All types of aircraft. Then their was a lot of other things to do on base like movies theater ,the gym, swimming pools. And then there's the snow for days many feet of snow. I loved living there and miss it so much..
